When Schneider dedicated driver Mark Jackson set out on a routine overnight delivery, he never imagined he’d become the reason a man lived to see his wedding day.
Here's how Mark's quick actions turned a life-threatening situation into a story of courage and hope.
Encountering the unexpected on a routine drive
Mark's journey began on a time-sensitive auto parts load from Memphis to Florida. While traveling through Alabama, Mark encountered a devastating accident. A car had hit a deer, was totaled and became engulfed in flames. The driver was trapped inside, unconscious, and in grave danger.
Mark's quick thinking and rapid response were crucial in this life-threatening situation. Without hesitation, Mark pulled over, put his flashers on and grabbed his fire extinguisher. He began battling the flames while others worked to pry the car doors open.
More people arrived and were unable to pass because of the accident. Mark ran and got extra fire extinguishers from those who had them. This ensured there were enough resources to combat the fire. When first responders arrived, a state trooper observed Mark and the others who stopped to help had saved the driver’s life.
Making a lasting impact
Mark's commitment to helping the driver didn't end at the scene of the accident. He took the time to find the man's name and searched online to locate his family. Mark then contacted them and told them which hospital the driver had been taken to. Thanks to these efforts, the family was able to be by his side during this critical time.
Mark later learned the man was driving to Florida to get married. As the days and weeks passed after the accident, Mark kept in touch with the family.
Kimberlie Bridges, Mark’s Client Services and Operations Manager, said the man’s family has been deeply grateful to everyone involved in the rescue.
“Mark’s courage and sense of responsibility to help those in need is a testament to his character,” Kimberlie said. “Mark holds a special place in the hearts of this family for helping their loved one.”
The driver spent over a month in intensive care and even more time in the hospital. This past spring, he moved to a rehabilitation facility in Florida, close to his family. His recovery has been remarkable – he is now able to stand on his own and communicate with ease. He and his fiancée have even set a new wedding date for August, and they’ve invited Mark to attend.
Honoring an act of courage
Mark's efforts and concern for an individual in harm's way, without thought of his own well-being, saved a man's life. That’s something few people can say.
For his exceptional courage, Mark earned an Orange Heart Presidential Award. This award recognizes selfless acts and promotes altruism and compassion among Schneider Associates.
