HazMat loads used to be challenging
Joe and I have had our HazMat (hazardous materials) certification since we started driving. In the past, I just couldn’t turn down the extra loads. I couldn’t afford it. That changed over the years. I became less enthused with HazMat loads. They had problems and I didn’t know some of the answers.
Also, it’s a little tense working with HazMat customers.
Some don’t perform safely at the level that Schneider does. We knew what we had to do but some didn’t agree. The bottom line is that I am an employee of Schneider and am expected to perform according to Schneider’s values and safety expectations.
To be fair, since we didn’t haul HazMat all the time, we didn’t have the same level of expertise as others. Special rules apply in different shipments. So it was always nice not having to haul any HazMat.
New HazMat specialists are here to help
That has changed with the implementation of new HazMat software, the HazMat checklist, and the HazMat call, which usually takes less than 10 minutes to complete with minimal hold time. We still get the training we need but now a team of HazMat specialists assist drivers to ensure the I’s are dotted and the T’s crossed.
Should a problem arise, they will handle the customer and help solve the issue. Schneider even pays for a required HazMat call.
Lastly, as Van Truckload Team drivers, we receive an extra cent per mile on every load we haul just to keep our HazMat certification.
Drive with confidence and compliance
I no longer dread the HazMat load, as I am confident that this team will ensure I am covered on all points with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the customer. My Compliance, Safety and Accountability (CSA) score is at stake. And I certainly don’t want to haul it unsafely.
Schneider lives safety first and always! It’s a done deal and a great reason to work at Schneider.
Thank you, HazMat Team, for all you do to protect us and others. You are the best of the best!
