As a freight broker, your resume plays a critical role in catching the attention of potential employers. Hiring managers and recruiters want to see if you have what it takes to be a successful freight broker at their company, and your resume is the first spot they will go to gather that information.

To craft a professional freight broker resume and set yourself apart from other job candidates, follow my top seven writing tips and check out an example of what a freight broker resume could look like.

7 freight broker resume writing tips

1. Incorporate keywords from the job description.

Adding keywords from the freight broker job description to your resume can increase your chance of getting noticed by the hiring manager. It shows them your professional experiences and skills match the requirements of the job.

The easiest way to figure out which keywords to include is by identifying repeated words throughout the job description's:

  • Requirements section.
  • Skills section.
  • Qualifications section.

2. Create a header.

At the top of your resume, create a header that includes your:

  • Name.
  • Phone number.
  • Email address.
  • Location (optional).

List your name first in a bold, easy-to-read font. Your contact information should go below your name.

Formatting tip: Keep the header clean and organized so your details are easily visible to potential employers.

3. Write a professional summary.

When you craft a professional summary for a freight broker resume, you want to highlight your recent work experience and professional accomplishments in a way that aligns with the position you’re applying for.

If you don’t have any freight broker experience, that’s OK! Since freight brokers are customer-facing positions, you can tie in any sales or customer service experience you have.

Formatting tip: Your professional summary should be two or three sentences long. If possible, include data to back up your statements.

4. List key freight broker skill sets.

Showcasing your skillsets on a resume shows the hiring manager what qualities you could bring to the table.

Some freight broker-related skills you can highlight that will make your resume stand out include:

  • Customer service experience.
  • Communication skills.
  • Problem-solving abilities.
  • Sales expertise.
  • Transportation industry knowledge (if applicable).

Formatting tip: Use bullet points to list your skills so the section is easy to read.

5. Highlight your relevant work experience.

If you’re applying for an entry-level freight broker role and don’t have any freight broker experience yet, list any customer-facing roles you’ve held. This can include positions like:

  • A server.
  • A barista.
  • A retail associate.
  • A sales associate.

Start with your most recent position, and then write each one in reverse chronological order. Each role you list should include:

  • Your job title.
  • The name of the company you worked/work for.
  • The dates (month and year) you were/are employed at the company.
  • Your job responsibilities.

Formatting tip: When listing your job experiences, start each bullet point with an action verb and put a period at the end of each sentence. Use present tense for your current job and past tense for previous work experience.

6. Include your educational background.

Now, list the formal level of education you’ve received and any relevant degrees you’ve earned.

Start with the highest level of education you've received and detail:

  • The type of degree you have.
  • The name of the educational institution.
  • The years you attended school.

Formatting tip: List your educational background at the bottom of your resume or in a separate section on the side.

7. Proofread your resume.

Reread your resume several times to make sure there are no grammatical errors or typos. Consider having a colleague, friend or family member look over your resume for any mistakes you may have missed.
