Becoming a master diesel technician is a great step for those looking to advance their careers in the diesel industry. It not only enhances your expertise, but also opens doors to greater recognition and more career opportunities.

At Schneider, we understand the importance of professional growth. Our commitment extends to providing the support you need at every stage of your career journey. Learn how to become a master diesel technician, including what certifications you need to achieve this status.

What is a master technician?

A master technician has passed all the necessary certification tests given by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). They are considered an expert in whatever area they tested in, such as medium-heavy trucks or collision repair.

How many ASE certifications do you need to be a master technician?

The number of certifications you need to be a master technician depends on what type of technician you are.

For a diesel technician, there are seven ASE certification tests that need to be completed to be recognized as a master truck technician. Technicians must retake each test every five years to maintain master status.

How long does it take to become a master technician?

The ASE requires two years of hands-on experience before you are eligible for most ASE certifications. You can take many of the ASE tests beforehand, but you won’t get the certificates until you finish the experience requirement.

Once you meet the experience requirement, you can earn the certifications needed to become a master technician. The amount of time it takes to complete the certifications depends on how long you need to take and pass each test in the series.

4 steps to become a master diesel technician

1. Have a high school diploma or GED.

Most companies require master diesel technicians to have a high school diploma or equivalent.

If you didn’t finish high school, you can enroll in classes to work toward a GED.

2. Attend a post-secondary training program.

Some people will pursue entry-level diesel tech roles right after they graduate high school. However, many employers require some type of post-secondary education for mid- to senior-level positions. That can include one of the following:

  • Certificate in diesel technology: Includes hands-on training in specialized areas. Usually takes a few months to one year to complete.
  • Technical diploma in diesel technology: Requires hands-on technical training and some general education courses. Generally takes one to two years to complete.

  • Associate degree in diesel technology: Requires hands-on technical training and general education courses. Typically takes two years to complete.

Technicians with degrees usually earn a higher starting pay compared to those without one.

3. Gain experience as a diesel technician.

Whether you pursue post-secondary training or enter the field right after high school, the ASE requires two years of hands-on experience before you can take any certification test. This should include maintaining, servicing and repairing heavy-duty motor vehicles.

4. Complete the ASE certification tests.

After you get the needed experience, you can take the seven certification tests to become a master truck technician.

Test areas include:

  • Diesel engines.
  • Drive train.

  • Brakes.

  • Suspension and steering.

  • Electrical and electronic systems.

  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).

  • Preventative maintenance inspection.

Each test has 40-50 multiple choice questions. You typically have one to two hours to complete each test.

When you pass all seven of the medium-heavy truck certification tests, you will be recognized as a master truck technician.

Move your maintenance career forward.
