At Schneider, we’re focused on fostering a workplace where everyone thrives.

One way this is brought to life is through associate-led Business Resource Groups (BRGs), organizations where associates can connect with others who share similar backgrounds and experiences.

For Katie Kolpack, Broker Assistant and core member of the LGBTQIA+ Alliance BRG, these groups have been a meaningful part of her experience at Schneider.

“Being a part of a BRG gives you a sense of community,” Katie said. “I am in multiple because I feel that I fit a few different communities here.”

Creating a sense of belonging

BRGs allow members to share common identities and values and build their sense of belonging in the workplace. For the LBGTQIA+ Alliance, this means supporting and uplifting Schneider associates regardless of orientation, gender identity or any other marginalized identity which may intersect.

“In a BRG, you take the time to really get to know each other and bond along that common interest,” she said. “For the Alliance BRG specifically, it gives us a safe space.”

The LGBTQIA+ Alliance’s mission is to further the growth and advancement of LGBTQIA+ members at Schneider and create a sense of community. Some of the BRG’s main initiatives are:

  • Partnering with Schneider’s Learning & Development team on diversity and inclusivity training, such as gender-neutral language and use of pronouns to ensure all members of the workplace feel safe and respected.
  • Creating safe spaces and events to promote LGBTQIA+ visibility and pride.
  • Attracting and retaining associates within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Raising awareness

BRGs are not just about creating a sense of belonging; they are also about educating and raising awareness across the organization.

“BRGs give us a way to help educate leaders and coworkers on how to be a strong ally to the community and it can help you develop personally and professionally,” Katie said. “Last year, I was able to go in front of the executive teams and tell my coming out story and talk about how you can better be an ally in the community.”

Being able to make this kind of impact gives associates like Katie a sense of purpose to go along with their careers.

“Being a part of the BRG gives me a platform,” Katie said. “I don't just show up to do my job – I also get to be a representative of the community within Schneider.”

Promoting professional growth

Being part of a BRG also gives associates a way to advance their careers and build skills that extend beyond their everyday roles. BRGs provide opportunities for networking events, mentorship opportunities and even grants or scholarships for continuing education.

“Joining a BRG can really help you develop personally and professionally too,” Katie said. “It has helped me in the networking space because you get to meet other people within Schneider, and it can push you to get out of your comfort zone.”

Katie’s leaders have always supported her involvement in BRG-related events, demonstrating Schneider's commitment to supporting associate growth.

“My leaders not only support me but strongly encourage me to attend the events,” Katie said. “There are certain times that I am pulled away from my job for a little bit, and my leaders have always supported me in that endeavor.”

Schneider's commitment to inclusion

Schneider’s commitment to fostering an inclusive culture resonates with associates like Katie, making them proud to be a part of the organization.

“Schneider has always been pro-associate,” Katie said. “All of the leaders I've ever reported to have had an open-door policy. They make themselves available to you and they listen to your needs.”

For Katie, it’s important for companies like Schneider to support associate-led initiatives like BRGs, as they give associates a chance to be recognized and make an impact.

“It really lets the community and potential talent recognize and see that your company is really engaged with the associates and they're going to listen to them,” she said.
