There are many routes you can take to become a diesel technician. One of them is by earning a degree in diesel technology from an accredited technical or community college.

Technical schools can equip you with essential skills and connect you with potential employers. Schneider, for example, partners with technical colleges across the U.S. to provide students with maintenance job opportunities after graduation.

Now, you might be wondering how much diesel technician school costs. We’ve outlined what to expect so you can be better prepared for the financial investment needed to pursue post-secondary training and start a maintenance career.

How much is it to get your diesel technician license?

Cost breakdown by program

The cost of attending a technical or community college varies greatly based on what program you pursue. You can earn:

Generally, a certificate program costs less than a technical diploma or an associate degree. That’s because it takes less time to earn a certificate (a few months to one year) than a technical diploma or associate degree (up to two years).

Here’s a breakdown of the cost of each program:

  • Certificate in diesel technology: Typically costs between $1,000-$8,000.
  • Technical diploma in diesel technology: Usually costs anywhere from $1,000-$15,000.
  • Associate degree in diesel technology: Generally costs between $10,000-$40,000.

Cost-influencing factors

When you think about the cost of pursuing a post-secondary training program, it's important to consider all the factors that will influence your overall expenses, not just the type of program you pick.

Other cost-influencing factors include:

  • What technical or community college you attend (private or public).
  • Whether you complete an in-person or online program.
  • If you go to an in-state or out-of-state school.
  • If tuition includes the cost of tools, books and other supplies, or if those will come at an extra cost.
  • If there are scholarships you can take advantage of.

Cost-saving ideas

Attending a school in the state you live in or completing an online program can help reduce the cost of tuition.

Plus, if you’re already working as an entry-level technician, you may be able to get financial support from your employer. Some companies, like Schneider, offer tuition reimbursement for full-time maintenance associates who want to pursue a degree in the field.

  • The brand of the tools.
  • The quality of the tools.

  • If a toolbox is included.

Cost of toolboxes

A good toolbox can cost anywhere from $1,000-$20,000 depending on the brand and the features of the box you choose.
