With countless job opportunities available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you start your search. So, if you’ve been wondering what to look for in a job, you’re not alone!

As a corporate recruiter at Schneider, I have regular conversations with job candidates and gain valuable insights into what they prioritize in potential roles. Let’s break it down and explore the key factors to consider when finding the right job for you.

10 things to look for in a job

1. Role responsibilities.

Take a close look at the job description to ensure the responsibilities align with your strengths, interests and skills.

For example, if you enjoy working on creative projects but the role is heavily data-driven, you might find it hard to stay engaged. Finding a job that complements your abilities can lead to better job satisfaction and success.

2. Work model.

Another important thing to look for in a job is the work model opportunities the company offers. Schneider, for example, offers in-person, hybrid and remote work options.

It’s important to think about which setup aligns best with your lifestyle and preferences. Ask yourself:

  • How much flexibility do I need in my daily schedule?
  • Do I thrive in a collaborative, face-to-face work environment, or do I prefer working independently in a quiet, remote setting?
  • Do I feel more productive and focused in an office or at home?

3. Job location.

If you’re looking at in-person or hybrid roles, another thing to consider is where the job is located. Ask yourself:

  • How will I get to the office (car, train, bus, etc.)?
  • Will I need to navigate multiple public transit lines?
  • How long will my commute be?
  • What does traffic look like during my commute?
  • How will commuting impact my daily life?

A manageable commute can greatly improve your overall experience and work-life balance in the long run.

4. Salary and benefits.

Compensation is a critical factor in any job decision.

Make sure you understand the job’s total compensation package, including items like:

  • Salary and bonuses.
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Retirement plans.
  • Tuition reimbursement.
  • Discount programs.

If the job description doesn't include this information, politely ask the recruiter or hiring manager about the role’s compensation and benefits during your interview.

5. Work hours.

As you weigh different job opportunities, consider the hours you’ll be expected to work and how they might affect your personal life. For instance, at Schneider, you can choose from a variety of work schedules, including:

Ask about policies regarding overtime, weekend work and holiday hours. It’s up to you to decide what schedule option will best fit your lifestyle.

6. Work-life balance.

When considering any job opportunity, it’s important to think about how the role will fit into your life outside of work.

Ask yourself questions such as:

  • Does the job offer flexible scheduling, such as remote workdays or adjustable start and end times, to accommodate personal commitments?
  • Will you ever be required to work outside of your normal hours?
  • Do you need to be on call?
  • Will you be able to take planned vacations?
  • Will you have time for family and social activities?

At the end of the day, finding a job that supports a healthy work-life balance helps maintain your overall well-being and happiness.

7. Company culture.

Feeling aligned with a company’s culture makes your workday more fulfilling and enjoyable.

Look for a company whose mission and values resonate with your beliefs. Explore the organization's website to find out how they:

  • Encourage collaboration and respect.
  • Promote inclusion.
  • Support associate well-being.
  • Foster opportunities for growth.

8. Company history.

A company’s reputation and stability can offer valuable insight into what it’s like to work there. Read industry articles and newsletters to learn more about the company, including how long it has been in operation and its growth trends.

For example, Schneider was founded in 1935 and has since grown to become one of the largest transportation companies in North America. A company with a strong, stable history, like Schneider, may offer greater job security.

9. Professional development opportunities.

Knowing a company supports your professional development can make a huge difference in long-term satisfaction and career success.

Look for companies that prioritize career growth. This might include access to things like:
  • Professional development courses.
  • Mentorship opportunities.
  • Workshops.
  • Tuition reimbursement.
  • Training and career progression opportunities.

10. Tools and technology.

Consider whether the company equips its employees with the tools and technology needed to succeed.

Working with a forward-thinking company that values innovation can also be a sign of growth potential. Ensure that your prospective employer is committed to creating a productive and future-focused workplace.

Consider a career in the transportation industry.

If you’re looking for a job where you can make a difference, a role in transportation could be the perfect fit. Discover why it might be a rewarding and meaningful next step in your professional journey.
