How to be productive over summer break without an internship

As a college student, knowing how to make the best use of those three-plus months you have off in summer can be tricky.

Maybe you just completed your freshman year and didn’t feel like you had enough experience to get an internship. Maybe you wanted one last summer of freedom before you start a full-time job after graduation.

No matter what year you are in school or whether you landed an internship or not, figuring out how to be productive over summer break is vital. Don’t spend your summer doing nothing. Now is the time to make the most of these three months off.

1. Work during the summer.

If you did not land an internship for the summer and are focused on spending this time making money, search for jobs that can both pay big and provide experiences that look good on your resume for the future.

Jobs like nannying, waitressing, working at a summer camp, etc. teach you skills such as leadership, problem-solving and team work. These are soft skills almost any employer finds valuable in potential associates.

2. Continue your education.

If your school offers some classes that you are unable to take during the normal school year, try to take them during the summer. Many of these classes are even online, meaning you have the option to live at home and still continue your education.

3. Travel.

Whether it be a road trip through the U.S. or something bigger, get your travel in now! Many universities offer travel abroad experiences throughout the summer where you can visit a new country and earn school credits.

4. Volunteer.

Find a way to give back to your community while you are living at school or at home. Volunteering at places like homeless shelters, shelters, libraries and food pantries are not only rewarding experiences, but also look great on resumes.

5. Update your professional skills.

Join your local young professionals’ group and begin networking so you can land an internship the following summer or a full-time job upon graduating.

Update your resume, cover letter and LinkedIn to make sure they are in tip-top shape for college career fairs the following school year. Work on your in-person and video interview skills while you’re at it as well.

6. Stay active.

Staying active is a great way to be productive over summer break. Look into going to a gym, research parks and trails near your home or consider joining a local sports team. It is the perfect time to set new fitness goals and work on leading a healthier lifestyle.

7. Most Importantly – HAVE FUN!

Take advantage of it being summer by enjoying the weather, going to the beach, biking, visiting your local farmers market, etc. The summer is a great time to be outside and enjoy what your city has to offer.
